Excellent series! And we in Minnesota are conditioned in the same way you outlined above — maybe that’s why I’ve always felt such a kinship with fans of the Rays and the Bucs. I’ve always had a sports soft spot for Tampa teams.

I’m a Twins fan and this is a trade that I think worked out well for both teams. I’d love to have Garza back, and Bartlett as well…but Delmon has been great, no problems, and good numbers.

As a Royals fan, and a fan who has followed the Rays for a long time now, I thought the Rays got the bad end of the deal from the beginning. Young is starting to live up to his potential, the Rays will soon be wishing they had him back… Soon will be realized as soon as Crawford signs a contract, leaving town.

I still think the Rays got the better end of the deal. Who knows how Young would have fared had he stayed in TB. Maybe his new surroundings woke him up, no one can say. Look at Josh Hamilton, the Rays have him plenty of chances before they just had to cut their losses, again, maybe it was a wake up call for Josh and he just needed a fresh start. If both sides feel they got the better end of the deal, than it was a perfect match. I’ll take another starting pitching and starting position player for Upton any day.

Fred, actually I would have compared the trade more along the lines of Young for Garza. I really feel that at 30 years of age, Bartlett has peaked, and will most likely be gone after this season.
I, too agreed with the trade of Young at the time, but I’d love to see his bat here in Tampa again. It appears that Young has put his personal issues behind him and is a true professional in Minnesota.

The Rays got two productive players for Young via Bartlett and Garza. So, if you compare Bartlett and Young, Young is a better position player and batter. However, if you add the arm that Garza brings to the “Tampa Bay table” along with Bartlett, the sum of the trade comes out much better for Tampa Bay. Additionally, Tampa Bay is a young team and the emotional distractions that Young brings to a team is very distracting (Tampa Bay can’t afford this; see B.J Upton).
